Tesco's 16th store in Norwich, on the corner of Dereham Road and Old Palace Road – the old Dial House site – is due to open next Friday, subject to the usual licensing formalities.
Following the long running battle and controversy surrounding the Unthank Road Tesco site, which opened in July last year, there was a less vigorous local opposition to this new store, which will seek to serve people on the northern edge of the Golden Triangle.
While local businesses and some residents expressed their concerns, a facebook campaign, No to Dereham Road Tesco, failed to attract significant support.
Tesco's power and influence in the retail market is the subject of national debate. However, the apparent inevitability of successful applications across Norwich is a cause for additional concern for many.
Has this resulted in campaingers losing the will to oppose new developments in Norwich, or are people warming to the competitive pricing that Tesco is able introduce?
